More Money In Your Pocket
If you get into a car accident in Louisville, your own auto insurance policy covers your immediate costs through Personal Injury Protection (PIP). Kentucky is a “no-fault” state meaning that coverage kicks in to pay for medical bills and lost wages, regardless of who caused the crash.
For decades, the rules governing these benefits stayed stuck in the past. But change has arrived with Kentucky State House Bill 627 becoming law. Most basic PIP plans have a cap of $10,000 for the total pool of money available after an accident. HB 627 changes what that money can do for you in those crucial days or weeks of recovery after an accident.
In the days before HB 627, those living paycheck to paycheck struggled to make ends meet if they missed work. Kentucky had long capped PIP wage loss benefits at only $200 per week. As of July 15th, 2026, this cap has been raised to $500 per week for lost wages. If you were forced to miss out on an entire month of work you may have recovered only $800. This amount would force many to choose between rent, groceries, or other bills. Now accident victims could collect $2,000. This is over double the amount of money meant to give you the financial stability you need to stay afloat before you are ready to return to work.
Your Coverage Can Go Further
HB 627 also helps keep those medical expenses billed to your PIP from being billed at exorbitant rates. Before July 15th, medical providers could bill your PIP policy for standard rates that they chose. This often meant your $10,000 in medical care could be gone before you realize it. This new law caps providers on overcharging. HB 627 achieves this by tying PIP medical billing to the Kentucky Workers’ Compensation Fee Schedule. These controlled, lower rates means your $10,000 can cover significantly more treatment, imagining, and physical therapy than ever before.
Even better for the injured driver is the ban on “Balance Billing” provided under HB 627. Before, auto insurers who refused to pay for the full price of a medical bill would pass the bill to you. This meant doctors offices and medical providers sending debt collectors to your door and phone. HB 627 bans this practice outright for PIP claims. Providers cannot collect the difference from you, coerce you into paying, or damage your credit score if you refuse to pay above the state-approved fee schedule.
In the worst-case scenario where a car crash results in a tragic loss of life, Kentucky had offered only $1,000 to cover final arrangements before. HB 627 increases the PIP funeral, cremation, and burial benefit up to $5,000. This change provides grieving families with meaningful financial relief when they need it most.
When Do These New Rules Apply To You
The transition to these new rules depends on two dates: when your insurance policy renewed and when your accident occurred.
The new caps and fees schedules apply to auto insurance policies issued or renewed on or after the law’s effective date on July 15th, 2026. If you already had a wreck in late 2025 or early 2026, the old rules govern your current open claim. Unfortunately, your weekly wage cap remains $200 and old billing rules apply. The new protections only come into place once your insurance policy undergoes its next official renewal date past the July deadline and a new crash occurs. I am working on updating my own policies.
Maximize Your Recovery
Because the weekly limits are much higher, your $10,000 total PIP cap can disappear faster if it’s not managed carefully. Fortunately, HB 627 explicitly codifies your right to direct your benefits. You can tell your insurance company exactly how to split your funds between medical bills and wage replacement to protect your finances.
Managing an insurance claim while dealing with painful physical injuries presents a serious challenge. Meanwhile insurance companies are looking out for ways to minimize your payout in the wake of these legislative changes. You do not have to fight these multi-billion-dollar corporations alone.
